The Victor Salvi Foundation works with colleges, universities and conservatories around the world to provide young harpists with performing opportunities and better learning facilities.

We organize and give support to student recitals and encourage both students and teachers to take part in the various activities that the foundation sponsors. This in turn brings the harp community closer together.

Support to universities is usually granted after a project has been presented to the Board of Directors. The board decides what sort of support can be provided and in what form. This can vary considerably, from providing harps for a given recital to donating grants for research assistance.

The foundation collaborates only with universities and colleges that comply with its goals. Click here to read about the foundation’s objectives.

Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University - USA

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, has the largest harp archive in the world. In November 2000, the foundation began supporting the library with numerous contributions including funds for maintenance and research facilities and donations of recordings, scores and harp accessories. The foundation’s contributions to the library have enabled it to establish the most comprehensive collection of harp music in the world. The collection now houses more than 5,200 scores including many rare editions and manuscripts, about 800 CDs, and more than 250 historic LPs and 78 rpm sound recordings. All of the materials donated by the foundation are catalogued and available to the public, they are also documented in the library’s online catalogue.

In early 2003, the foundation established a fund for the university enabling the Harold B. Lee Library to hire an International Harp Archives student research assistant. This enabled the expansion of the archives and provided a research aid for visitors.

With the cooperation of the Stanley Chaloupka family, the foundation donated a Lyon & Healy Style 100 harp to the International Harp Archives. The harp was presented to the University at the American Harp Society Institute in Salt Lake City, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the instrument first-hand.

Over the past five years, the Archive has acquired several major archival collections of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, programs, itineraries, diaries, and non-commercial recordings. Some of the foremost archives received include the documents of Henriette Renie, Carlos Salzedo, Mildred Dilling and the New York Harp Ensemble.

Royal Academy Of Music, University Of London - UK

The Royal Academy of Music (RAM) is one of the leading music institutions in the world. For more than 150 years, the college has been training some of the best harpists in the world. Professor Skaila Kanga, the international renowned harpist, is the head of the Harp Department. She is a devoted musician who ensures the continued evolution of the harp.

In collaboration with Holywell Music Ltd and the Royal Academy of Music, the Victor Salvi Foundation presents an annual recital by harp students. The concert is part of the ’Student Recital Series’ and takes place at Holywell’s showroom in London. Programs in the past have varied considerably, giving students an opportunity to perform different styles of music. In 2003, they performed some of the Russian masters and the following year’s program showcased pieces by Marcel Tournier. The students select their own music for this annual event.

The RAM Extravaganza, an annual event which takes place at Duke’s Hall, brings the Harp Department together to celebrate the harp in all its forms. Harp students form the academy play music in genres ranging from ensembles to solo and orchestra accompaniment.

Composers are invited to write new pieces for the occasion and the result is an ’extravaganza’ of music for the harp. The Victor Salvi Foundation supports this annual event.

In 2006, the Governing Body of the Royal Academy of Music (London) elected Julia Salvi an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (HonARAM), a recognition only offered to friends of the Academy who have made a special contribution to the institution, but were not students there.
