From January 10-17, 2009 the beautiful colonial city of Cartagena, Colombia will be the site of the third Cartagena International Music Festival recognized by
The New York Times last year as one of the “Top 53 Travel Destinations of 2008.”
Under the artistic direction of Charles Wadsworth, founding artistic director of both the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Chamber Music Series at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and Stephen Prutsman, associate artistic director of the festival and medal winner at the Tchaikovsky and Queen Elizabeth piano competitions, well-known artists from around the world will come together to participate in a remarkable week of wonderful music. Among the acclaimed artists scheduled to perform will be violinists Robert McDuffie, Anne Akiko Meyers and Angelica Gamez; Hsin-Yun Huang, viola; City of London Sinfonia Orchestra; St. Lawrence String Quartet; cellists, Andrés Díaz and Kristina Cooper, Jose Franch-Ballester, clarinet; Erika Nickrenz, piano, and harpist, Emmanuel Ceysson, among others.
There will be 19 concerts in historic venues throughout the city – including, four at 10:30 p.m in the public square of San Pedro, which last year attracted thousands of local residents of all ages. In addition, there will be three public concerts scheduled for some of the most underprivileged neighborhoods of the city making it possible for everyone in Cartagena to experience part of the week’s events.
The visiting artists will again participate in more than 80 master classes during the festival week, they will be offered to some of the leading conservatory students in Colombia.
